Devlog #3 - Pre-Game and Progression

Hello Talentees!

After a slower couple of weeks, with some much needed rest, I've been pushing forward at full speed with the 0.3.X update for Talented. The class system is really starting to take shape, the progression system is mostly in and I've just started adding some Traits (the bonuses you can choose before the game starts) to both the Wizard and the Archer class.

Overall, things are looking really good for this update. With just a few more small features and the usual iteration/balance pass/UX passes to follow. So let's talk a little bit about traits...

As you play as a class (for example Wizard) you'll gain Ancestry, enough Ancestry will increase your class level. Every 5 levels grants you access to a trait choice, an innate buff that will be with you from the very start of the run.

Note: In the future every class level will unlock either an ability or a talent for that class.

Some traits will be simple, just like in the image above, a small stat up that can mostly just be picked on personal preference. Others will be a more difficult choice that may even decide the kind of talent build you look for in your runs. Take for example the new level 10 Archer traits:

Sharpshooter - The your first three shots each day are guaranteed to Critically Strike. (Critical Strikes instantly kill the enemy hit)
Seeing Double - Your first five shots each day are a double shots.

Quite a few factors can enter into the choice. Double shots are likely to kill any opponent early into a run (making them effectively a crit), but later in the run the crit will deal far more damage. Double shots allow for key on-hit effects to proc more often, but certain talents only proc from crits.

Combining difficult choices within trait choices and the potential for synergies between traits, this pre-game should become an interesting place to spend a little time experimenting and perfecting your playstyle.

Time for me to get implementing the rest of the traits now! I'd love to hear your thoughts and trait ideas in the comments or on our Discord!
